Acupuncture for Anxiety & Depression

How Acupuncture Treats Anxiety and Depression in Edmonton

Emotional and psychological symptoms are among the most widely studied conditions in acupuncture research. The mechanism is well established: acupuncture modulates the autonomic nervous system, shifting the body out of the chronic sympathetic (fight-or-flight) state that underlies most anxiety presentations and into the parasympathetic rest-and-repair state.

At the neurochemical level, acupuncture has been shown to influence serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol regulation – the same pathways targeted by conventional antidepressant and anxiolytic medications. The difference is that acupuncture works by supporting the body’s own regulatory systems rather than overriding them.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) adds a second layer of analysis. In TCM, emotional and organ health are directly interconnected. Anxiety is linked to imbalances in the Heart and Kidney meridians; persistent low mood often involves Liver Qi stagnation; chronic overthinking is associated with Spleen disharmony. Your acupuncturist uses these frameworks alongside Western clinical assessment to build a treatment plan specific to your pattern.

Our acupuncturists hold Doctor of Acupuncture (Dr.Ac) credentials – the highest clinical qualification available in Canada – and work collaboratively with the clinic’s naturopathic and functional medicine practitioners when comprehensive care is indicated. Learn more on our Acupuncture Services page.

What the Research Shows

↓ Cortisol & Stress Hormones
Acupuncture measurably reduces HPA axis reactivity, lowering cortisol and blunting the physiological stress response.
↑ Serotonin & Dopamine Activity
Clinical studies show acupuncture upregulates monoamine neurotransmitter activity linked to mood stabilization and anxiety reduction.
↑ Parasympathetic Activation
Needle stimulation activates the vagus nerve and parasympathetic pathways, producing a measurable shift from fight-or-flight to rest-and-repair.
↓ Inflammatory Markers
Chronic inflammation is now recognized as a significant contributor to depression. Acupuncture consistently reduces inflammatory cytokines including IL-6 and TNF-alpha.

For a regularly updated review of acupuncture research, see the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

Naturopathic Medicine for Anxiety & Depression

Naturopathic Medicine for Emotional Health in Edmonton

Naturopathic doctors approach anxiety and depression by investigating the physiological drivers that conventional medicine often overlooks. Thyroid dysfunction, adrenal fatigue, nutrient deficiencies (particularly B12, iron, magnesium, and Vitamin D), blood sugar dysregulation, and gut-brain axis imbalance are all common contributors to mood disorders that respond well to naturopathic intervention.

Your naturopathic doctor will conduct a thorough intake and may order targeted lab work to identify these underlying factors. Treatment typically involves a combination of clinical nutrition, targeted supplementation, botanical medicine, and lifestyle medicine – all coordinated with the rest of your care team at Red Leaf.

Learn more about naturopathic approaches on our Naturopathic Medicine page.

What Naturopathic Medicine Investigates

Thyroid & Adrenal Function
Subclinical hypothyroidism and HPA axis dysregulation are among the most commonly missed contributors to anxiety, fatigue, and low mood.
Nutrient Deficiencies
Low B12, iron, magnesium, and Vitamin D each have direct, documented effects on mood, energy, and nervous system regulation.
Blood Sugar Dysregulation
Blood sugar instability produces anxiety-like symptoms including irritability, brain fog, and racing heart – often mistaken for a primary anxiety disorder.
Gut-Brain Axis
Approximately 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. Dysbiosis and intestinal inflammation have direct downstream effects on mood and stress tolerance.

Functional Medicine for Emotional Health

Functional Medicine: Finding What’s Driving Your Symptoms

Functional medicine takes a root-cause investigation approach to emotional health. Where a conventional appointment may focus on symptom management, a functional medicine consultation at Red Leaf asks: what is actually causing this person’s anxiety or depression, and can we identify it with objective testing?

These tests frequently reveal correctable imbalances that, once addressed, produce significant improvement in mood, energy, and resilience – often in cases where patients have already tried conventional treatment without lasting results.

Read more on our Functional Medicine page.

Common Investigations for Emotional Health

Cortisol Rhythm Testing
A 4-point salivary cortisol panel maps the daily arc of your stress hormone – identifying whether you are in a state of chronic activation, depletion, or dysrhythmia.
Comprehensive Thyroid Panel
Beyond basic TSH, a full panel including free T3, free T4, and thyroid antibodies catches subclinical dysfunction that standard testing routinely misses.
Organic Acids Testing
Provides a window into neurotransmitter metabolism, mitochondrial function, and nutrient status – revealing patterns directly relevant to mood and cognitive function.
Microbiome & Inflammation Assessment
Identifies gut dysbiosis, intestinal permeability, and inflammatory load – all of which have documented roles in depression and anxiety through the gut-brain axis.

Massage Therapy for Stress & Anxiety

Massage Therapy for Emotional Wellness

Chronic stress and anxiety are not just mental states – they live in the body. Elevated cortisol, jaw clenching, shoulder tension, shallow breathing, and tight hip flexors are all physical manifestations of an overactivated nervous system. Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) at Red Leaf directly addresses these somatic patterns alongside the emotional drivers.

Our RMTs work with nervous system-informed techniques including Swedish relaxation massage, myofascial release, and craniosacral approaches to support parasympathetic activation and reduce the physical load of chronic stress. Massage therapy is often used in parallel with acupuncture as part of a coordinated emotional health plan.

Learn more about massage therapy for stress and anxiety at Red Leaf Wellness.

How Chronic Stress Lives in the Body

Jaw, neck & shoulder holding
Chronic muscle guarding in the upper body is among the most common physical presentations of anxiety and unresolved stress.
Shallow, restricted breathing
Diaphragmatic restriction keeps the nervous system in a low-grade threat state. RMT techniques directly address respiratory muscle patterns.
Hip flexor & psoas tension
The psoas is the body’s primary fight-or-flight muscle. Chronic contraction signals ongoing threat to the nervous system even when no threat is present.
Parasympathetic restoration
Therapeutic touch reliably activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering heart rate, reducing cortisol, and restoring a felt sense of safety.

Mind Body Therapies

Mind Body Therapies for Emotional Health

Mind body therapies work directly with your body’s energy systems to release deeply held tension, restore nervous system regulation, and support the kind of healing that goes beyond what talk therapy or physical treatment alone can reach. They are particularly well-suited to emotional health presentations where stress, anxiety, or trauma have become embedded in the body itself.

At Red Leaf Wellness, we offer two specialized energy-based modalities that complement our acupuncture and naturopathic care:

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST)
A gentle, hands-on therapy that works with the rhythms of the cerebrospinal fluid and nervous system to release deep physical and emotional holding patterns. Especially effective for trauma, anxiety, and chronic stress.
Biodynamic Energetic Therapy (BET)
A clothed, non-physical energy practice that stimulates and rebalances the body’s energy systems. Supports emotional regulation, reduces energetic depletion, and promotes a restored sense of groundedness and clarity.

These therapies can be used as a standalone treatment or coordinated with your acupuncture and naturopathic care plan. Learn more on our Mind Body Therapies page.

When Mind Body Therapies Help Most

Anxiety or stress that feels physically held in the body – tight chest, jaw tension, shallow breathing
Trauma responses that persist despite conventional therapy or medication
Emotional exhaustion and a sense of being depleted at a level that rest alone does not restore
Chronic low mood with no clear physiological cause identified by testing
Difficulty unwinding or transitioning out of a state of hypervigilance, even in safe environments
Wanting to complement acupuncture or naturopathic treatment with deeper nervous system support

What to Expect

Your First Appointment

Every discipline at Red Leaf follows the same core approach: a thorough intake, a clear explanation of your care plan, and treatment that begins from your first visit.

1
Comprehensive intake
A detailed history of your emotional health, physical symptoms, sleep, stress, and lifestyle. No two presentations are the same and your practitioner takes the time to understand yours.
2
Treatment begins same day
Most patients receive their first treatment in the initial session. Your practitioner explains their clinical reasoning and proposed approach before you begin.
3
Multi-disciplinary coordination
Where your case benefits from more than one discipline, practitioners communicate directly. You do not need to coordinate your own care between providers.
4
Progress review & plan adjustment
Treatment plans are reviewed regularly and adjusted as you progress. Most patients notice meaningful change within 4 to 6 sessions.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes – and this is one of the best-supported applications of acupuncture in clinical research. Multiple systematic reviews and meta-analyses have found acupuncture to be significantly more effective than sham acupuncture and comparable to drug therapy for generalized anxiety, with fewer side effects. The mechanism involves measurable changes in cortisol levels, autonomic nervous system activity, and neurotransmitter regulation – particularly serotonin and GABA pathways. At Red Leaf, our Doctor of Acupuncture practitioners combine traditional point selection with current clinical evidence to build your treatment protocol.
No – and we are clear about that. Integrative care at Red Leaf is designed to complement, not replace, conventional mental health treatment. If you are currently working with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or counsellor, our practitioners are happy to work alongside that care. If you are on psychiatric medication, please inform your practitioner at your intake. Many patients find that integrative treatment reduces the severity and frequency of symptoms, sometimes allowing their prescribing physician to adjust medications over time – but that decision always rests with your prescribing doctor.
This depends on the nature, duration, and severity of your presentation. For most acute anxiety or stress cases, meaningful improvement is typically noticed within 4 to 6 acupuncture sessions. Chronic or complex presentations, or those with significant physiological contributors identified through naturopathic or functional medicine testing, may require a longer initial treatment phase. Your practitioner will give you a realistic treatment timeline at your first appointment and review it as you progress.
Most Alberta employer health benefit plans include coverage for acupuncture and massage therapy, and many also cover naturopathic medicine. Coverage amounts vary by plan. Our acupuncturists hold Registered Acupuncturist (RAc) credentials from the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta, our naturopathic doctors are registered with the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta, and our massage therapists are registered with Massage Therapist Association of Alberta (MTAA) – these are the standard credentials required by Alberta benefit plans. We provide receipts appropriate for benefit submission after each visit.
No referral is needed. You can book directly with any of our practitioners through JaneApp. If you are unsure which discipline is right for your situation, you can contact the clinic and we will help direct you to the most appropriate starting point.
The key difference is integrated care. At Red Leaf, our practitioners work in the same clinic, share clinical context, and can consult with each other on complex cases. If your acupuncturist identifies a hormonal or nutritional pattern that would benefit from naturopathic investigation, that referral happens internally and your care plan is updated accordingly. You receive coordinated care rather than disconnected appointments at different locations where providers are unaware of each other’s work.

“As a clinician and leader, I see myself not only as a caregiver but also as a teacher—empowering patients with the knowledge and tools they need to take charge of their health. By educating and guiding them, I can help transform their lives far beyond the treatment room, creating lasting wellness that they can carry with them. – Dr. Tammy Lalonde”

Caring for people is my true passion and one of life’s greatest callings. With years of experience as both a Paramedic and Acupuncturist, I’ve supported patients through obvious and invisible injuries alike. I’ve been there during moments of deep crisis – delivering babies in cars parked roadside, providing care at 30,000 feet, or flying emergency medevacs over the Arabian desert. Through these experiences, I’ve learned not just how to care for people in urgent need but how lasting health is built over time through lifestyle, nutrition, and proactive care.

Over the years, my focus has shifted toward prevention – helping people earlier, before minor concerns turn into complex conditions. A big part of that work is my role in leading our Hormone Health program, where we help patients address hormonal imbalances that impact energy, mood, sleep, and overall quality of life.

To better support our patients and lead in this evolving area of care, I’ve earned certification as a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) – a designation held by only a select number of clinicians across Canada. This credential reflects a high level of expertise in evidence-based menopause and hormone health management. Combined with advanced training in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) through Worldlink Medical, this dual focus allows me to guide our Hormone Health program with clinical depth, strategic vision, and a commitment to whole-person care.

My academic journey has allowed me to bridge Eastern and Western medicine into a truly holistic care model. I have a particular passion for working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, and PTSD, including those in the Armed Forces and Emergency Services. With a career spanning North America and the Middle East, I’ve served as a clinician, educator, and emergency medical dispatcher.

I hold active licensure and registration with the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAA), the California Acupuncture Board, the Alberta Herbalists Association (AHA), and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). I’ve also served as a Board Director with the Alberta Pain Society and currently sit on the CAA Competence Committee.

Helping people comes naturally to Michelle! As a highly skilled Acupuncturist, Massage Therapist, and Advanced Care Paramedic she is widely recognized for developing unique care plans which draw on her knowledge and therapeutic touch gained across each of these specialized disciplines. Having over twenty years of combined expertise in caring for her patients, Michelle has had a front row seat to observe how stress and emotion affect the mind and body. Complementing her acupuncture services at Red Leaf Wellness, Michelle offers a variety of therapeutic and relaxation massage therapies, including pregnancy massage, myofascial release and myofascial cupping.

Michelle began her health career as a massage therapist, graduating the 2200hr Massage Program at Macewan University in 2001. Being active in competitive sport in her youth, Michelle understood the benefits of massage on sport performance, recovery and injury prevention. She subsequently branched into emergency care and became an Advanced Care Paramedic where she was able to offer a calming presence in stressful, emergent situations. Michelle has always believed that soft skills, an extra moment spent with family, or a hand to hold on the way to the hospital, can be as healing as the specific medical interventions themselves. Working as a Paramedic Michelle saw, and began to question, how it is that people differ in disease and the aging process and why the same drug benefited one person, but not the other. Her lifelong learning journey had her begin to look for these answers in the time-tested practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture, thus kicking off another quest for knowledge at MacEwan University’s Acupuncture Program.

Michelle provides care at Red Leaf Wellness as an independent contractor.

Headshot of Cora Rennie, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist at Red Leaf Wellness Edmonton

Cora Rennie 🇬🇧

Position: Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist
Categories: Anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Biodynamic Cranial Sacral Therapy, Depression, Grief Support, Hormonal Health, Hormone Health, Inclusive Health, Insomnia and Sleep Health, PTSD, Stress, Women's Health
Location: Alberta

Cora Rennie is a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist who helps people feel safer, more regulated, and more present in their bodies. She brings more than two decades of personal experience with this gentle healing work into every session. What clients notice most is the sense of calm, clarity, and renewed ease that continues well after they leave the table.

Cora’s journey with craniosacral therapy began over twenty years ago when a single practice session left her body deeply relaxed in a way she had never before experienced. That moment opened her eyes to how profoundly the nervous system responds to safe, informed touch. It also became personal when she saw dramatic improvement in her mother’s migraines and vertigo after just a few sessions with a practitioner.

After completing a rigorous two-year Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy (BCST) training, Cora has developed a deep understanding of how the body’s own innate healing intelligence can be supported. She holds certification and registration with the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America, and her work is grounded in respect for the body’s natural rhythms and its drive toward health.

Clients come to Cora for many reasons, from ongoing stress and overwhelm to persistent tension patterns, sleep disruption, and emotional holding. Many people report:

  • A sense of nervous system calm and safety
  • Better sleep and less reactivity to stress
  • A feeling of being more settled in their body
  • Enhanced capacity to engage with life rather than just survive it
  • Support through major life transitions like perimenopause and menopause

Because BCST works with the nervous system itself, clients often find that their whole system begins to feel more coherent and resilient. This can lead to better outcomes with other forms of care too, as the body becomes more able to integrate changes and treatments.

Cora believes that every symptom is part of the body’s effort to protect and to adapt. Her role is not to “fix” you but to offer a supportive environment where your system can experience safety, resource, and deeper regulation. She feels honored to witness the shifts that happen when a body is finally allowed to come into balance.

Her approach is warm, perceptive, and grounded in connection, inviting you to be an active participant in your own healing. Whether you are navigating stress, transitioning through hormone changes, or seeking a more integrated sense of well-being, Cora’s work offers a space to be met, supported, and held with care.

Cora provides care at Red Leaf Wellness as an independent contractor.
