Understanding Your Transition

Understanding Perimenopause and Menopause

Perimenopause and menopause are natural biological transitions – but that does not mean they need to be endured without support. Understanding what is happening in your body is the first step toward getting the right care.

What Is Perimenopause?

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause when estrogen and progesterone begin fluctuating irregularly. It can start as early as the mid-30s, typically begins in the mid-40s, and can last anywhere from 2 to 10 years.

Periods may become irregular, but you have not yet reached menopause. Symptoms can be just as intense as – or more intense than – menopause itself. Many women in perimenopause are told nothing is wrong because standard testing often misses the fluctuation pattern.

What Is Menopause?

Menopause is defined as 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. The average age of natural menopause in Canada is 51. After this point you are in post-menopause.

Estrogen decline affects bone density, cardiovascular health, cognition, and metabolism – making informed care important beyond symptom relief alone. For women navigating vaginal and urinary changes alongside menopause, our Women’s Health program provides additional focused support.

Surgical and Premature Menopause

Surgical menopause – occurring after removal of the ovaries – brings on an abrupt hormonal drop rather than a gradual transition. Symptoms often arrive faster and more intensely than natural menopause. Premature menopause (before age 40) carries additional long-term health implications including elevated cardiovascular and bone density risk.

Both are frequently underserved in conventional care. Our ND and NP teams are experienced in the specific clinical picture these presentations create. If you have had a hysterectomy, oophorectomy, or received a premature menopause diagnosis, we can help.

Why Do So Many Women Go Untreated?

56% of women with moderate-to-severe symptoms have never discussed them with a healthcare provider. Many are told their symptoms are normal, dismissed as stress, or handed a wait-and-see approach that stretches for years.

With 5.9 million Canadians currently without a regular doctor and median specialist wait times at 30 weeks, even those who do seek help face significant barriers. Our program exists to close that gap – no referral, no waitlist, no gatekeeping.

Menopause Society Certified Practitioner MSCP - Red Leaf Wellness Edmonton

Clinical Standard

What the MSCP Designation Means for Your Care

The MSCP – Menopause Society Certified Practitioner – is awarded by The Menopause Society (formerly NAMS), the leading North American clinical authority on menopause management. It is not a course certificate or introductory credential: it requires demonstrated advanced competency in menopause care, commitment to evidence-based protocols, and ongoing recertification to maintain.

Practitioners who hold this designation are assessed against the highest clinical standard in the field – covering symptom evaluation, hormonal assessment, treatment selection, and long-term cardiovascular and bone health management. It is one of the rarest designations in Alberta.

Red Leaf Wellness has MSCP-credentialed practitioners on our team. When you book a menopause or perimenopause appointment, your care plan is guided by clinicians whose practice has been validated against this standard.

Why MSCP matters for your care +

One Clinic. Two Tracks.

Why Naturopathic Doctors and Nurse Practitioners Under One Roof Matters

Most women going through perimenopause or menopause have to choose: see a naturopath for natural support, or find a prescribing clinician for hormones. At Red Leaf Wellness, you do not have to choose. Our Naturopathic Doctors and Nurse Practitioners operate within the same program, share context on your case, and can transition your care between tracks if your needs change.

Perimenopause is also a time when other conditions commonly surface or intensify. It is well established that hormonal fluctuations can significantly amplify ADHD symptoms – our clinical team has specific experience supporting patients navigating both at once. For patients who navigated earlier fertility challenges and are now approaching perimenopause, our team can provide continuity of care across the reproductive lifespan.

The ND and NP tracks are not competing approaches – they are complementary pathways serving different patient needs. The tab section below walks through how each track works in detail.

Why patients choose integrated care

  • ✦ Start with root-cause investigation, escalate to prescriptive care if needed – without changing clinics
  • ✦ ND protocols complement NP-prescribed hormones – they are not mutually exclusive
  • ✦ One team, one record, coordinated follow-up across disciplines

How the Program Works

Two tracks. One integrated team. No referral required.

Whether you are looking for root-cause investigation through our Naturopathic Doctor track or clinical prescriptive management through our Nurse Practitioner track, your path begins with the same first step: a free Discovery Call. Hover over or select your track below to see the full process and fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Menopause Care in Edmonton

No referral is required to book either the Naturopathic Doctor or Nurse Practitioner track. You can self-refer directly by booking a free Discovery Call. This is one of the key differences between our program and the conventional specialist route, where most patients require a GP referral and then wait up to 30 weeks for an initial appointment.

Both tracks begin with a free Discovery Call and a $99 Preliminary Consultation — but they differ meaningfully in treatment philosophy, scope of practice, and financial considerations.
Our Naturopathic Doctors take a root-cause, natural-first approach using functional testing and botanical and nutritional protocols. Our Nurse Practitioners provide evidence-based prescriptive hormone management including MHT and BHRT. Coverage, lab costs, and follow-up structure also differ between the two.
For a full breakdown of how to choose the right path, see our guide: ND vs NP: Which Hormone Health Pathway Is Right for You?

Menopause hormone therapy (MHT, also called HRT) refers broadly to prescribed estrogen and progesterone treatment used to manage symptoms and protect long-term health. Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) refers to hormones that are molecularly identical to those your body produces – these may be commercially manufactured or compounded to custom dosages. Our NP track offers both options, tailored to your lab results, symptom picture, and health history. For more detail, see our BHRT program page.
Surgical menopause occurs when the ovaries are removed (oophorectomy), causing an abrupt drop in estrogen rather than a gradual transition. Symptoms typically arrive faster and more intensely than natural menopause, and the long-term health implications – including bone density and cardiovascular risk – are significant. Premature menopause (before age 40) carries similar concerns. Both are frequently underserved in conventional care. Our ND and NP teams are experienced in the specific clinical picture these presentations create and can support you from the point of diagnosis or surgery onward.
Perimenopause can last anywhere from 2 to 10 years, with an average duration of around 4 to 5 years. Symptoms often begin in the mid-40s, though some women notice changes as early as their mid-30s. Because the transition is gradual and hormone levels fluctuate rather than decline in a straight line, symptoms can feel unpredictable. Both our ND and NP tracks are designed to support you across all stages of this transition, not just at the point of menopause itself.
Yes. Estrogen plays a significant role in regulating serotonin and other neurotransmitters, so hormonal fluctuations during perimenopause and menopause commonly contribute to anxiety, low mood, irritability, and depression. These symptoms are often treated as a standalone mental health issue without addressing the hormonal component. It is also worth noting that perimenopause can significantly amplify ADHD symptoms in women who have been previously diagnosed or undiagnosed. Both our ND and NP programs assess mood and cognition as part of your complete hormone picture.
Naturopathic Doctor consultations are often covered by extended health benefits – check your plan for ND coverage details. FSA and HSA accounts are generally eligible for both ND and NP services. Nurse Practitioner consultation fees are not typically covered by extended health benefits, but FSA and HSA accounts typically apply. Lab testing through the ND track is fee-for-service and not covered by provincial health. Lab testing ordered by the NP track is processed through public health and is covered at no cost for most standard panels. Your practitioner will advise you on any testing costs at time of ordering.
Yes. Both the ND and NP tracks are available virtually for patients across Canada in provinces where we are authorized to operate. Our clinic is based in Edmonton, Alberta, and we offer in-clinic care at our Glenora District location. Virtual patients complete the same program structure as in-clinic patients, including preliminary consultation, testing coordination, initial consultation, and follow-up care.

“As a clinician and leader, I see myself not only as a caregiver but also as a teacher—empowering patients with the knowledge and tools they need to take charge of their health. By educating and guiding them, I can help transform their lives far beyond the treatment room, creating lasting wellness that they can carry with them. – Dr. Tammy Lalonde”

Caring for people is my true passion and one of life’s greatest callings. With years of experience as both a Paramedic and Acupuncturist, I’ve supported patients through obvious and invisible injuries alike. I’ve been there during moments of deep crisis – delivering babies in cars parked roadside, providing care at 30,000 feet, or flying emergency medevacs over the Arabian desert. Through these experiences, I’ve learned not just how to care for people in urgent need but how lasting health is built over time through lifestyle, nutrition, and proactive care.

Over the years, my focus has shifted toward prevention – helping people earlier, before minor concerns turn into complex conditions. A big part of that work is my role in leading our Hormone Health program, where we help patients address hormonal imbalances that impact energy, mood, sleep, and overall quality of life.

To better support our patients and lead in this evolving area of care, I’ve earned certification as a Menopause Society Certified Practitioner (MSCP) – a designation held by only a select number of clinicians across Canada. This credential reflects a high level of expertise in evidence-based menopause and hormone health management. Combined with advanced training in Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) through Worldlink Medical, this dual focus allows me to guide our Hormone Health program with clinical depth, strategic vision, and a commitment to whole-person care.

My academic journey has allowed me to bridge Eastern and Western medicine into a truly holistic care model. I have a particular passion for working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, and PTSD, including those in the Armed Forces and Emergency Services. With a career spanning North America and the Middle East, I’ve served as a clinician, educator, and emergency medical dispatcher.

I hold active licensure and registration with the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAA), the California Acupuncture Board, the Alberta Herbalists Association (AHA), and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). I’ve also served as a Board Director with the Alberta Pain Society and currently sit on the CAA Competence Committee.

Helping people comes naturally to Michelle! As a highly skilled Acupuncturist, Massage Therapist, and Advanced Care Paramedic she is widely recognized for developing unique care plans which draw on her knowledge and therapeutic touch gained across each of these specialized disciplines. Having over twenty years of combined expertise in caring for her patients, Michelle has had a front row seat to observe how stress and emotion affect the mind and body. Complementing her acupuncture services at Red Leaf Wellness, Michelle offers a variety of therapeutic and relaxation massage therapies, including pregnancy massage, myofascial release and myofascial cupping.

Michelle began her health career as a massage therapist, graduating the 2200hr Massage Program at Macewan University in 2001. Being active in competitive sport in her youth, Michelle understood the benefits of massage on sport performance, recovery and injury prevention. She subsequently branched into emergency care and became an Advanced Care Paramedic where she was able to offer a calming presence in stressful, emergent situations. Michelle has always believed that soft skills, an extra moment spent with family, or a hand to hold on the way to the hospital, can be as healing as the specific medical interventions themselves. Working as a Paramedic Michelle saw, and began to question, how it is that people differ in disease and the aging process and why the same drug benefited one person, but not the other. Her lifelong learning journey had her begin to look for these answers in the time-tested practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture, thus kicking off another quest for knowledge at MacEwan University’s Acupuncture Program.

Headshot of Cora Rennie, Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist at Red Leaf Wellness Edmonton

Cora Rennie 🇬🇧

Position: Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist
Categories: Anxiety, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Biodynamic Cranial Sacral Therapy, Depression, Grief Support, Hormonal Health, Hormone Health, Inclusive Health, Insomnia and Sleep Health, PTSD, Stress, Women's Health
Location: Alberta

Cora Rennie is a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist who helps people feel safer, more regulated, and more present in their bodies. She brings more than two decades of personal experience with this gentle healing work into every session. What clients notice most is the sense of calm, clarity, and renewed ease that continues well after they leave the table.

Cora’s journey with craniosacral therapy began over twenty years ago when a single practice session left her body deeply relaxed in a way she had never before experienced. That moment opened her eyes to how profoundly the nervous system responds to safe, informed touch. It also became personal when she saw dramatic improvement in her mother’s migraines and vertigo after just a few sessions with a practitioner.

After completing a rigorous two-year Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy (BCST) training, Cora has developed a deep understanding of how the body’s own innate healing intelligence can be supported. She holds certification and registration with the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America, and her work is grounded in respect for the body’s natural rhythms and its drive toward health.

Clients come to Cora for many reasons, from ongoing stress and overwhelm to persistent tension patterns, sleep disruption, and emotional holding. Many people report:

  • A sense of nervous system calm and safety
  • Better sleep and less reactivity to stress
  • A feeling of being more settled in their body
  • Enhanced capacity to engage with life rather than just survive it
  • Support through major life transitions like perimenopause and menopause

Because BCST works with the nervous system itself, clients often find that their whole system begins to feel more coherent and resilient. This can lead to better outcomes with other forms of care too, as the body becomes more able to integrate changes and treatments.

Cora believes that every symptom is part of the body’s effort to protect and to adapt. Her role is not to “fix” you but to offer a supportive environment where your system can experience safety, resource, and deeper regulation. She feels honored to witness the shifts that happen when a body is finally allowed to come into balance.

Her approach is warm, perceptive, and grounded in connection, inviting you to be an active participant in your own healing. Whether you are navigating stress, transitioning through hormone changes, or seeking a more integrated sense of well-being, Cora’s work offers a space to be met, supported, and held with care.
