Why people seek craniosacral therapy
What it is
A gentler way to settle the nervous system
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a light-touch therapy that focuses on the craniosacral system: the membranes and fluid that surround and protect your brain and spinal cord. Rather than manipulating or correcting the body, your practitioner makes gentle contact and follows the body’s own subtle rhythms, creating the conditions for tension to release on its own.
The approach grew out of osteopathy and has been refined over the following century into the slow-paced therapy practised today. What makes the biodynamic approach distinct is its emphasis on safety. When the body feels safe, the nervous system can step down from its protective, fight-or-flight state and move toward rest, digestion, and repair. This is the state in which the body does much of its own healing.
Your central nervous system coordinates activity throughout your body, and it shapes how you respond to everything from a stressful week to an old injury. Over time, unresolved tension and strain accumulate in the tissues that surround it. Craniosacral therapy works gently with those tissues to help release that build-up, so the system can find its way back toward balance and ease.
Life heals itself, given the right conditions.

Who it is for
People carrying tension they cannot put down
Because the therapy is so gentle, it suits people who find more forceful bodywork too intense, including those who are highly sensitive, in pain, or feeling depleted. Clients commonly come to Red Leaf Wellness for craniosacral therapy in Edmonton when they are dealing with:
Stuck on high alert
Ongoing stress and a nervous system that stays switched on long after the moment has passed.
Restless sleep
Nights that do not leave you feeling rested or restored.
Held tension
Tension headaches, jaw tightness, or knots that other bodywork has not resolved.
Recovery and overwhelm
Recovering after injury, illness, surgery, or a demanding period of life.
What to expect
What a session looks like
A session is calm, unhurried, and entirely non-invasive. There is nothing you need to do or prepare, and you are welcome to talk or to stay quiet, whichever helps you settle. Here is what a typical visit involves.
Your practitioner begins by discussing your health history and what has brought you in, so the session is shaped around your needs.
You stay fully clothed and settle comfortably, either lying down or seated.
Using light, still contact, your practitioner makes gentle connection with areas such as the head, the base of the spine, or wherever your body invites attention.
You are guided to notice what you feel. As your awareness grows, unconscious patterns of tension often begin to soften.
Many clients describe a gradual sense of release, small internal adjustments, and a deep, settled calm by the end of the session.
What to expect from treatment
Gentle, and cumulative
Some people feel a noticeable shift after a single session, while for most the benefits build over a series of treatments as the nervous system learns that it is safe to let go.
In the day or two after a session, it helps to drink water, rest where you can, and give yourself a little space. Some people feel immediately lighter, while others notice the effects unfold gradually over the following days as the body continues to settle.
Craniosacral therapy is not a substitute for medical care, and it does not promise specific outcomes. It works well alongside other treatments, and it pairs naturally with the other approaches on our mind-body therapies team.
Perimenopause
Craniosacral therapy and your nervous system during perimenopause
Perimenopause is sometimes described as a second puberty: a years-long hormonal transition that reshapes how the body and nervous system respond to stress. As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate, many women notice mood swings, anxiety, irritability, disrupted sleep, and a sense of being constantly wound up. These experiences are not simply in your head. Much of what perimenopause feels like lives in the body and the nervous system.
Progesterone has a naturally calming effect on the nervous system, and as it declines, the body can move more easily into a state of high alert. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy offers gentle support here. By helping the body feel safe enough to step out of fight-or-flight and into rest and repair, sessions can ease the physical tension and restlessness that often accompany perimenopause.
For many women, the hardest part is the sense that the changes arrive without warning: a short fuse one afternoon, a restless night for no clear reason, a wave of overwhelm in the middle of an ordinary day. Craniosacral therapy does not stop these shifts, but by giving the nervous system regular, calming input, it can help the body feel like a steadier place to be while you move through them.
Craniosacral therapy is not a hormone treatment, and it does not replace medical or naturopathic care. It works best as the calming, nervous-system side of a fuller plan, where our Naturopathic Doctors and Nurse Practitioners address the hormonal picture directly. To understand what is happening and why, our guide to perimenopause anxiety, depression, and mood swings walks through the hormonal changes and the options available.
Craniosacral therapy pairs naturally with our naturopathic and nurse practitioner led care for the hormonal side of this transition.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy at Red Leaf Wellness is provided by Cora Rennie, who brings a calm, attuned presence to this gentle work.
Cora Rennie 🇬🇧
Cora Rennie is a Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapist who helps people feel safer, more regulated, and more present in their bodies. She brings more than two decades of personal experience with this gentle healing work into every session. What clients notice most is the sense of calm, clarity, and renewed ease that continues well after they leave the table.
Cora’s journey with craniosacral therapy began over twenty years ago when a single practice session left her body deeply relaxed in a way she had never before experienced. That moment opened her eyes to how profoundly the nervous system responds to safe, informed touch. It also became personal when she saw dramatic improvement in her mother’s migraines and vertigo after just a few sessions with a practitioner.
After completing a rigorous two-year Biodynamic CranioSacral Therapy (BCST) training, Cora has developed a deep understanding of how the body’s own innate healing intelligence can be supported. She holds certification and registration with the Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association of North America, and her work is grounded in respect for the body’s natural rhythms and its drive toward health.
Clients come to Cora for many reasons, from ongoing stress and overwhelm to persistent tension patterns, sleep disruption, and emotional holding. Many people report:
- A sense of nervous system calm and safety
- Better sleep and less reactivity to stress
- A feeling of being more settled in their body
- Enhanced capacity to engage with life rather than just survive it
- Support through major life transitions like perimenopause and menopause
Because BCST works with the nervous system itself, clients often find that their whole system begins to feel more coherent and resilient. This can lead to better outcomes with other forms of care too, as the body becomes more able to integrate changes and treatments.
Cora believes that every symptom is part of the body’s effort to protect and to adapt. Her role is not to “fix” you but to offer a supportive environment where your system can experience safety, resource, and deeper regulation. She feels honored to witness the shifts that happen when a body is finally allowed to come into balance.
Her approach is warm, perceptive, and grounded in connection, inviting you to be an active participant in your own healing. Whether you are navigating stress, transitioning through hormone changes, or seeking a more integrated sense of well-being, Cora’s work offers a space to be met, supported, and held with care.
Cora provides care at Red Leaf Wellness as an independent contractor.
