Pain Management Edmonton: Acupuncture, Massage Therapy & Functional Medicine
– Integrative Care · Edmonton, AB –
Pain Has a Root Cause. We Find It – and Treat It.
Holistic pain management in Edmonton combining acupuncture, massage, manual osteopathy, and functional medicine.
Chronic pain isn’t a life sentence. Our integrative approach addresses the underlying drivers of your pain (not just the symptoms) using evidence-informed Eastern and Western therapies under one roof. No referral required.
– Understanding Chronic Pain –
Chronic pain is not just physical. It is systemic, and it deserves a systemic response.
When pain persists beyond an injury or becomes untethered from any obvious cause, it is a signal that the body’s regulatory systems are under strain. Inflammatory pathways, disrupted energy flow, accumulated soft-tissue tension, and unresolved metabolic dysfunction all contribute to how pain is amplified, maintained, and experienced over time.
At Red Leaf Wellness, our pain management program is built on a single principle: find the drivers, address them directly, and help the body restore its own balance. We combine the ancient intelligence of acupuncture and hands-on manual therapy with the diagnostic rigour of functional medicine, creating a plan that is specific to your physiology, not a generic protocol.
– Our Treatment Disciplines –
Three disciplines. One integrated plan.
Discipline 01
Acupuncture for Pain Management
Acupuncture is one of the most extensively studied non-pharmacological pain therapies available [Vickers et al., 2012]. By placing fine needles at precise anatomical points, our acupuncturists stimulate the body’s natural analgesic response, triggering the release of endorphins and neurotransmitters that modulate pain signals at both the spinal cord and brain level.
Beyond pain relief, acupuncture improves local circulation, reduces inflammatory cytokine activity, and addresses the energetic stagnation that underlies many chronic pain conditions in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Treatment is highly individualised: your symptoms, not a diagnosis, guide your acupuncture points.
Our acupuncturists hold Doctor of Acupuncture (Dr.Ac) credentials and are registered with the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta. Many carry additional training in pain-specific protocols including electrostimulation, cupping, and herbal adjuncts.

Discipline 02
Massage Therapy & Manual Osteopathy
Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) and Manual Osteopathy work in complementary ways to address the physical dimension of pain. Where massage therapy for pain relief in Edmonton focuses on releasing tension held in muscles, fascia, and connective tissue, manual osteopathy (governed in Canada by the Canadian Federation of Osteopaths) takes a whole-body structural view, assessing how restrictions in joints, membranes, and visceral structures affect pain and movement patterns throughout the body.
Together, these hands-on disciplines help reduce pain at its source: breaking down adhesions, improving lymphatic drainage, restoring healthy joint mechanics, and allowing the nervous system to downregulate its pain response. Both are safe, effective, and appropriate for a wide range of acute and chronic pain presentations.
RMT services are covered under most extended health benefit plans. Manual osteopathy is increasingly recognised by benefit providers: check your plan details or ask our team.

Discipline 03
Functional Medicine: Investigating the Root Cause
Many people living with chronic pain have never had a thorough investigation of the systemic factors driving their condition. Functional medicine fills this gap. Through comprehensive lab testing and in-depth clinical assessment, our functional medicine practitioners and naturopathic doctors identify the metabolic, inflammatory, hormonal, and nutritional imbalances that are silently amplifying your pain experience.
Common root causes our team investigates include: chronic systemic inflammation, gut dysbiosis (which drives inflammatory load), nutrient deficiencies affecting nerve and muscle function, blood sugar dysregulation, and thyroid or hormonal imbalances, all of which are demonstrably linked to pain amplification and poor recovery.
The result is a targeted intervention plan (dietary, supplemental, and lifestyle) designed to reduce your internal inflammatory burden and support the work of your hands-on practitioners.
