Your Gut Symptoms Have a Root Cause. We Help Find It.
Edmonton’s integrative digestive health program: acupuncture, naturopathic medicine, functional lab testing, and nutritional consulting – coordinated around you.
Digestive problems are rarely one thing. Inflammation, microbiome imbalance, stress responses, food sensitivities, and structural tension can all contribute. Our team looks beyond symptom management to identify what’s actually driving your gut issues – and builds a care plan around you, whether you’re already seeing a gastroenterologist or starting fresh. Our Integrative Approach
Six Ways We Support Your Digestive Health
Our practitioners don’t work in silos. Depending on your presentation, we may draw on any combination of the following modalities – designed to complement, not replace, your existing medical care.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture targets points along the stomach, spleen, and large intestine meridians to regulate gut motility, reduce visceral inflammation, and calm the enteric nervous system. Clinical research supports its use for IBS, functional dyspepsia, and nausea. Red Leaf acupuncturists hold the Doctor of Acupuncture (Dr.Ac) credential and are registered with the College of Acupuncturists of Alberta.
Naturopathic Medicine
Our NDs identify root causes behind your digestive symptoms – from dysbiosis and leaky gut to food sensitivities and hormonal effects on gut function. Treatment plans combine evidence-informed nutrition, targeted supplementation, and lifestyle strategies tailored to your specific presentation. Registered with the College of Naturopathic Doctors of Alberta and the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.
Functional Medicine & Lab Testing
Advanced diagnostics – including comprehensive stool analysis, food sensitivity panels, SIBO breath testing, and microbiome mapping – give us an objective picture of your gut environment. Functional medicine moves beyond symptom suppression to targeted intervention. Learn more at the Institute for Functional Medicine.
Herbal Medicine
Plant-based therapies – including peppermint, ginger, licorice root, slippery elm, and berberine – have documented efficacy for a range of digestive complaints. Our registered herbalists prescribe evidence-informed formulas calibrated to your specific condition and any concurrent medications, in accordance with Alberta Herbalists Association standards.
Massage Therapy & Manual Osteopathy
Abdominal massage improves gut motility, reduces diaphragmatic tension, and lowers the physical stress load that often underlies chronic digestive issues. Manual osteopathy addresses structural contributors to gut dysfunction through hands-on joint and soft tissue work. Both are offered by credentialed practitioners at Red Leaf.
Nutritional Consulting
What you eat matters – and how your body responds to what you eat matters more. Evidence-informed dietary approaches including low-FODMAP, anti-inflammatory, and elimination protocols help identify triggers and build a long-term eating strategy around your gut. Offered standalone or alongside other care at Red Leaf.
A Closer Look
Naturopathic Medicine & Functional Medicine for Digestive Health
Two of the most powerful tools in gut health care – and why they work differently than what you may have tried before.
Naturopathic Medicine
The 5R Framework for Gut Healing
Naturopathic doctors use a structured, sequenced approach to gut repair known as the 5Rs. Rather than managing symptoms in isolation, this framework addresses the gut environment systematically – which is why it produces more durable results than symptom-only treatment.
1. Remove
Identify and eliminate triggers – food sensitivities (IgG/IgA panels), pathogens, SIBO, or inflammatory foods via elimination protocols such as low-FODMAP or anti-inflammatory diets.
2. Replace
Restore digestive capacity with digestive enzymes, hydrochloric acid support, and bile salts where indicated – addressing the upstream deficiencies that allow undigested food to irritate the gut lining.
3. Re-inoculate
Rebuild a healthy microbiome using evidence-informed probiotics and prebiotic fibre, tailored to your stool analysis findings – not generic off-the-shelf products.
4. Repair
Support gut lining integrity with nutrients such as L-glutamine, zinc carnosine, and slippery elm – particularly important in leaky gut, post-infectious presentations, and IBD.
5. Rebalance
Address the lifestyle factors that perpetuate gut dysfunction – stress, sleep quality, and the HPA axis (cortisol response), which directly affects gut motility and permeability.

Functional Medicine
Diagnostics That Tell You What’s Actually Happening
Most patients arriving at Red Leaf Wellness with chronic gut issues have already had standard bloodwork – and been told everything looks normal. Functional medicine uses a different tier of testing, designed to reveal the gut’s actual microbial environment, barrier integrity, and systemic stress response.
Diagnostic Tools We Use
GI-MAP Comprehensive Stool Analysis
Maps pathogens, parasites, bacterial diversity, inflammatory markers (calprotectin, secretory IgA), and zonulin (intestinal permeability). Considered the gold standard in functional gut assessment.
SIBO Breath Testing
Lactulose hydrogen/methane breath testing identifies bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine – a common, frequently missed driver of bloating, abdominal pain, and altered bowel habits.
Food Sensitivity Panels (IgG & IgA)
Identifies delayed immune reactions to specific foods that standard allergy tests (IgE) miss entirely – a key factor in chronic bloating, fatigue, and skin symptoms alongside gut issues.
Organic Acids Testing (OAT)
A urine panel that reveals yeast overgrowth, mitochondrial function, neurotransmitter metabolism, and nutritional deficiencies that often accompany chronic digestive conditions.
Cortisol & HPA Axis Testing
Elevated cortisol increases gut permeability and suppresses secretory IgA, weakening mucosal immunity. Addressing the stress-gut axis is essential when gut symptoms worsen with life stress.

The Research
Evidence-Informed Care for the Gut
The gut-brain connection is one of the most studied areas in integrative medicine. Research published through the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health shows acupuncture can meaningfully improve symptom scores in IBS and functional gastrointestinal disorders, with effects on gut motility, pain perception, and the autonomic nervous system.
The Canadian Digestive Health Foundation recognizes that diet, stress, and lifestyle are central to managing most functional digestive disorders. Naturopathic doctors and nutritional consultants are uniquely positioned to address these factors through individualized, non-pharmacological approaches.
For complex presentations – including gastroparesis, post-infectious gut changes, or digestive symptoms linked to PCOS or thyroid dysfunction – functional medicine diagnostics provide objective data that can be shared with your specialist. Read our in-depth guide to managing gastroparesis with acupuncture and naturopathic medicine.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral to book?
No referral is needed for any of our services. You can book directly with an acupuncturist, naturopathic doctor, or other practitioner. If you’re unsure where to start, book a free Discovery Call and we’ll help you identify the best fit.
How does acupuncture actually help with digestive issues?
Acupuncture influences the enteric nervous system – the network of nerves that governs gut function independently of the brain. By stimulating specific points, acupuncture can regulate gut motility, reduce visceral hypersensitivity (a key driver of IBS pain), and modulate inflammation in the gut lining. It also activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which shifts the body out of the “fight or flight” state that worsens most digestive conditions.
Can your services work alongside my gastroenterologist’s treatment?
Yes – and this is one of our most common patient situations. Many patients come to us while already working with a GI specialist. Our role is to address the factors that medications often don’t – stress, diet, microbiome health, and lifestyle – and to support your body’s ability to respond well to conventional treatment. We are happy to coordinate with your specialist and can share clinical notes on request.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the condition and how long it has been present. Acute issues – like a sudden bout of reflux or nausea – may resolve in 2 to 4 sessions. Chronic conditions like IBS or Crohn’s typically require a longer commitment of 8 to 12 sessions to see sustained improvement. Your practitioner will give you a realistic timeline and measurable goals at your intake appointment.
Is direct billing available for these services?
Yes. Red Leaf Wellness offers direct billing for acupuncture and massage therapy to most major insurers. Naturopathic medicine coverage varies by plan – contact your insurer or our front desk to confirm. A detailed receipt is always provided for insurance claims.
