Healing Injuries with Acupuncture in Edmonton
Acupuncture is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine – a system of internal medicine that has been successfully treating many different aliments for thousands of years. It is recognized by the National Institute of Health and the World Health Organization as an effective and safe therapy for healing injuries.
A flaw in Western medicine is its inability to effectively treat disease and injuries, but rather treats the symptoms presented from disease and injury. Additionally, pharmaceuticals can often mask the root issue and surgery can sometimes be more damaging than beneficial. However, we do recognize the need for Western medical interventions, and we work closely with your other Practitioners.
With Acupuncture, healing injuries can be done safely without drugs and help reduce the need for surgery. It is a holistic therapy that works well independently or in conjunction with Western medicine techniques, and is an extremely effective treatment for both acute and chronic injuries.
How Acupuncture heals injuries:
- Improves circulation
- Promotes healthy organ function
- Restores the flow of blocked qi to injured tissues
- Reduces and blocks pain signals within the nervous system
- Stimulates the release of endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers)
Acute Injuries:
An acute injury is sudden and spontaneous, and is often the result after one traumatic event.
Examples of acute injuries include:
- Shoulder dislocations
- Wrist fractures
- Hamstring muscle sprains
- Low back strain
Acupuncture commonly treats acute injuries by inserting tiny gauge needles both locally and distally of the injury to help flush it with fresh blood and oxygen. In addition to the treatment, herbs may also be recommended to strengthen the tissues of the body and help induce muscle relaxation.
Chronic Injuries:
Chronic injuries occur over time and are the result of repetitive trauma(s) to the tendons, bones, and joints.
Examples of chronic injuries include:
- Swimmer’s shoulder
- Tennis elbow
- Runner’s knee
- Shin splints
- Plantar Fasciitis
Before starting treatment, a thorough assessment and review of previous injuries will be required to determine the underlying issue of chronic injuries. Then, after the assessment, acupuncture needles are placed on your body accordingly. These needles are very thin and are used to stimulate the correlating acupuncture points needed for optimal healing. Herbs may then also be recommended, to help further speed up your recovery time.
For both acute and chronic injuries, other techniques and tools such as cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, and electro-stimulation can be used to further increase the blood flow and create more mobility in the injured tissues and joints.
