Acupuncture and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Anyone can get PTSD at any age. This includes war veterans and survivors of physical and sexual assault, abuse, accidents, disasters, and many other serious events.

Acupuncture’s fundamental goal is to bring balance to the body’s Qi (or chi). The concept of Qi can be described as our body’s life force or energy, which is responsible for carrying healing releases from one point to the affected areas in the body. Our overall health is guided by our Qi, from the maintenance of our body’s temperature to our ability to protect ourselves against illness. The goal in acupuncture is to regulate and rehabilitate the body by guiding and stimulating this energy.

What exactly is PTSD?

If you or somebody you have known has suffered PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), it is all too telling how difficult and debilitating the experience can be. PTSD can arise from abuse, accidents, tragic events, loss, and other psychologically compromising situations. It runs on a spectrum – as trauma can be subjective to each individual and affects everybody differently.

Symptoms of PTSD vary – some people have dizzying anxiety attacks, nervous spells, trouble sleeping, feel haunted by what they experienced and even relive moments in their mind. These thoughts and experiences are normal and often pass with time. However, when they last for a long time, they can compromise or disrupt a person’s day-to-day life.

How can Acupuncture Help?

Patients look to acupuncture to calm jangled nerves as a result of their trauma. They can use acupuncture to seek clarity in the obstacles they face in their healing process, and often look for compassion in themselves and others around them.

One of the most important things acupuncture can do is be a means for support in understanding what has happened to them on a deeper level. Freeing these nerves can help with freeing difficult memories – and it is inspiration and progress to help them let go and move on.

A person’s Qi can unfortunately remain disturbed even once the mind has evaluated and processed the traumatic experience. Perhaps talk-therapy has calmed a person’s psychological and emotional outlook, but their body remains fragile from the trauma.

This disturbance in the Qi can cause a person with PTSD to be susceptible to triggered episodes if found in remotely similar circumstances. This can deeply affect sleep, digestion, and the immune system. What’s worse, pain patterns can return sometimes even years after the event has taken place.

If you or somebody you know is suffering from PTSD and the chosen healing approaches have only proven to work to a certain extent, considering acupuncture could make a world of a difference to their quality of life. Releasing this energy from all levels of the body and mind could prove effective as a final means of healing. Contact us for more information or to book an appointment with us today.
